Street Art in East Málaga: TRADITION and CONSCIOUSNESS in the artistic discourse

If there is something that made me fall in love with Malaga the first time I saw the city, it was the street art that can be found in so many places. On this occasion I will show you some murals that are distributed towards the area of “El Palo”, a place that is on the way to Malaga East.

I remember that day I got lost, well... I didn't get lost but I intentionally sneaked through the streets of this Andalusian city with the intention of being surprised by its coast. And boy, was I surprised!

Arte Callejero en Málaga Este: TRADICIÓN y CONSCIENCIA en el discurso artístico

Si hay algo que me enamoró de Málaga la primera vez que vi la ciudad, fue el arte callejero que hay por tantos sitios. En esta ocasión les mostraré algunos murales que se distribuyen hacia la zona de “El Palo”, un lugar que queda camino a Málaga Este.

Recuerdo que aquel día me perdí, bueno… no me perdí sino que intencionalmente me escabullí por las calles de esta ciudad andaluza con intención de sorprenderme con su costa. Y vaya que me sorprendí!!

After having visited several of its corners along the coast, I must admit that Malaga East is still among my favorite places.

The environment, in this area, begins to change significantly, and not only can be seen in its “merenderos”, but there are urban exponents, especially residential, that tell us of a traditional space, of the people.

Its culture can be seen in the streets but especially in the murals, which are distributed along the beach and in its parallel and perpendicular streets.

Here is one of my most precious collections of street art.

Después de haber visitado varios de sus rincones por la costa, debo reconocer que Málaga Este sigue estando entre mis lugares preferidos.

El entorno, en esta zona, empieza a cambiar notablemente, y no solamente se puede ver en sus “merenderos”, sino que hay exponentes urbanos, especialmente residenciales, que nos hablan de un espacio tradicional, de la gente.

Su cultura se ve en las calles pero especialmente se observa en los murales, que se distribuyen a lo largo de la playa y en sus calles paralelas y perpendiculares.

A continuación les dejo una de mis colecciones más preciadas de arte callejero.

In the first shots above, the strength of flamenco can be clearly seen in the paintings. You can see the danzaoras, the clapping, and in the expressions of the hands and looks of this art, you can clearly read the passion of the Andalusian people. The images are accompanied by a poem that says: "And so I have been staying on the shore. Philosophical the questioning and poetic the finding” (María Zambrano).

In addition you can see the fishing nature of the town, as well as the place given to the corrida de toros (bullfighting). This is something regrettable and although there are many people mobilizing to stop it, being Andalusia a region with such a strong tradition, it is still not possible to eliminate this practice. You can see the bullring in one of the images.

En las primeras tomas arriba presentadas, se observa con claridad la fuerza del flamenco en las pinturas. Se ven las danzaoras, las palmas, y en las expresiones de las manos y miradas de este arte, se lee con claridad la pasión del pueblo andaluz. A las imágenes las acompaña un poema que dice: ”Y así he ido quedando a la orilla. Filosófico el preguntar y poético el hallazgo” (María Zambrano).

Además se puede ver la naturaleza pesquera del pueblo, como también el lugar que se le da a la corrida de toros. Esto es algo lamentable y aunque hay mucha gente movilizándose para detenerlo, al ser Andalucía una región de tradición tan fuerte, todavía no es posible eliminar esta práctica. Se ve la plaza de toros en una de las imágenes.

My favorite is the lighthouse appearing in a light blue sky through the beige wall. Not only is the image beautiful, but it is also extremely attractive because of its colors.

These paintings evidence a good amount of life time, as they are peeling and even faded. The image of the child and the eyes are clear examples of this, although I don't know if I'm looking too optimistically, but I find a certain beauty even in those “flaws” that time added to these works of art.

Mi preferida es el faro que aparece en un cielo celeste por entre la pared color beige. La imagen no sólo es preciosa, sino que también es sumamente atractiva por sus colores.

Estas pinturas evidencian una buena cantidad de tiempo de vida, pues están descascaradas y hasta desteñidas. La imagen del niño y de los ojos son claros ejemplos de ello, aunque no sé si yo estoy mirando con mucho optimismo, pero encuentro cierta belleza incluso en esos “defectos” que el tiempo añadió a estas obras de arte.

This other collection of images was about 100 meters ahead, and they completely change the discourse not only of my post but also of the city, because while we could just read: TRADITION, now we can read CONSCIOUSNESS.

And in these new images, clearly younger in their existence, we can see something that is also written, and no longer in Spanish but in English Life (life).

Now we see the bottom of the sea, which reminds us that we are still in a coastal city, but now the protagonists are not the fishermen, but the marine fauna.

Esta otra colección de imágenes estaba unos 100 metros más adelante, y cambian por completo el discurso no sólo de mi post sino también de la ciudad, ya que si bien recién podíamos leer: TRADICIÓN, ahora podemos leer CONSCIENCIA.

Y es que en estas nuevas imágenes, claramente más jóvenes en su existencia, se observa algo que además está escrito, y ya no en español sino en inglés Life (vida).

Ahora vemos el fondo del mar, lo que nos recuerda que seguimos estando en una ciudad costera, pero ahora los protagonistas no son los pescadores, sino la fauna marina.

Now we see an irony, a hypocrisy of humanity. A mobile at the bottom of the sea with a heart. A mobile surrounded by life whose balance and health depend on our not doing, because for them to be well we simply don't have to do anything. Yet therein lies our pollution.

With the background of the word LOVE, again in English, accepting in an indirect way the undeniable transformation of the Andalusian society, today struggling to keep a place in their own payment while being displaced without asking permission by nor-European investors, we see a fish in front of a woman diver, who observes it. They observe each other.

To these images we add a less garbage, more fish, and others that you will be able to contemplate and interpret yourselves, that continue indicating the importance of taking care of the marine ecosystem, but also the responsibility of us (human beings) for its contamination.

Ahora vemos una ironía, una hipocresía de la humanidad. Un móvil en el fondo del mar con un corazón. Un móvil rodeado de vida cuyo equilibrio y salud dependen de nuestro no hacer, porque para que ellos estén bien sencillamente no tenemos que hacer nada. Sin embargo, ahí está nuestra contaminación.

Con el fondo de la palabra LOVE, de nuevo en inglés, aceptando de manera indirecta la transformación innegable de la sociedad andaluza, hoy luchando por mantener un lugar en su propio pago mientras son desplazados sin pedir permiso por inversores nor-europeos, vemos a un pez frente a una mujer buzo, que lo observa. Se observan.

A estas imágenes se les suma un menos basura, más peces, y otras que podrán contemplar e interpretar ustedes mismos, que siguen indicando la importancia de cuidar el ecosistema marino, pero también la responsabilidad nuestra (de los seres humanos) de su contaminación.

These murals, as you can see in the photos, constitute several meters of artistic expression, and something that I really like is the coherent message that they seek to convey one and the other. It is as if it were a story told on a wall, and then another story comes to answer or continue the previous message.

Estos murales como pueden ver en las fotos, constituyen varios metros de expresión artística, y algo que me gusta mucho es el mensaje coherente que buscan transmitir uno y el otro. Es como si se tratada de una historia contada en una pared, y como si luego otra historia viniera a responder o a continuar al mensaje anterior.
