As we all know, today is March 8, International Women's Day, the date that commemorates the fateful incident in which 129 textile workers in New York lost their lives in 1857 in a fire while protesting against their working conditions: long working hours, low wages, precarious working conditions and the different treatment they suffered compared to their male colleagues. This, therefore, is a day of struggle and protest, but it's also a day of celebration.

Como todos sabemos hoy es 8 de Marzo, Día Internacional de la Mujer, fecha en la que se conmemora el fatídico incidente en el que 129 obreras textiles en Nueva York perdieron la vida en 1857 en un incendio mientras manifestaban en contra de las condiciones laborales que tenían: extensas jornadas de trabajo, sueldos bajos, condiciones de trabajo precarias y las diferencias de trato que sufrían en comparación con sus colegas hombres. Este, por ende, es un día de lucha y reivindicación, pero también es un día de celebración.

Because the truth is that in recent decades, especially in the 21st century, women have made progress on the issue of equal rights, have conquered ground in spaces that were previously almost exclusively male and have demonstrated what we always knew, but that some didn't dare to recognize, that women are beings as or more capable than men for any task. A little more than a hundred years ago it was very difficult for a woman to think of having a scientific career, but then Maria Salomea Skłodowska, Marie Curie, appeared and opened the way: she discovered radium and polonium; she's the only person to have won the Nobel Prize in two different fields, Physics in 1903 and Chemistry in 1911; she was the first woman to teach at the University of Paris, the first woman to direct a laboratory at the University of Paris and the first person to be buried with honors in the cemetery of the French capital. Thanks to her and then to other women, today we have women in laboratories all over the world, studying, disseminating and making their contribution to the world of physics, chemistry, astrophysics, genetics, from the consulting rooms in your neighborhood to the offices of NASA, women have conquered the world of science. And so on in every field. It depends a lot on each particular city, but nowadays one can go out on the street and see women managing a construction site, driving public transportation, at the head of a law firm or a bank, presiding over a country, dominating the music charts in the world... and although there's still work to be done, this is a great advance.

Porque la verdad es que en las últimas décadas, especialmente en el siglo XXI, las mujeres han logrado avances en el tema de la igualdad de derechos, han conquistado terreno en espacios que antes eran casi exclusivamente masculinos y han demostrado lo que siempre supimos, pero que algunos no se atrevían a reconocer, que las mujeres son seres tanto o más capaces que los hombres para cualquier tarea. Hace poco más de cien años era muy difícil para una mujer pensar en tener una carrera científica, pero entonces apareció Maria Salomea Skłodowska, Marie Curie, y abrió el camino: descubrió el radio y el polonio, es la única persona en haber obtenido el Premio Nobel en dos campos distintos, Física en 1903 y Química en 1911; fue la primera mujer en dar clases en la Universidad de París, la primera mujer en dirigir un laboratorio en la Universidad de esa ciudad y la primera persona en ser sepultada con honores en el cementerio de la capital francesa. Gracias a ella y luego a otras mujeres, hoy día tenemos mujeres en los laboratorios de todo el mundo, estudiando, difundiendo y haciendo su aporte al mundo de la física, la química, la astrofísica, la genética, desde las consultas en tu barrio hasta las oficinas de la NASA, las mujeres han conquistado el mundo de las ciencias. Y así en cada campo. Depende mucho de cada ciudad en particular, pero en la actualidad uno puede salir a la calle y ver mujeres dirigiendo una obra de construcción, conduciendo un medio de transporte público, a la cabeza de un bufete de abogados o de un banco, presidiendo de un país, dominando las carteleras musicales en el mundo... y aunque aún hay trabajo por hacer, esto es un gran avance.

I thought about sharing a list of the women I admire, but there are so many! I would have to start that list with my mother, my sister, my friends... so I preferred to narrow down the list and to celebrate this day and help - even a little bit - to spread the work of great women I admire, I want to share with you names in the fields I know the most. I will talk about films, movies, stories, authors and books. The list is not and can never be definitive, because it would be too long for this post, but let this sample serve to celebrate all women through a few names.

Pensé en compartir una lista de las mujeres que admiro, pero ¡son tantas! Tendría que empezar esa lista por mi madre, mi hermana, mis amigas... así que preferí acotar la lista y para celebrar este día y ayudar - aunque sea un poquito - a difundir la obra de grandes mujeres que admiro, quiero compartirles nombres en los campos que más conozco. Les voy a hablar de películas, de cine, de historias, de autoras y de libros. La lista no es ni podrá ser nunca definitiva, porque tendría una extensión demasiado larga para este post, pero sirva esta muestra para celebrar a todas las mujeres a través de algunos pocos nombres.

For this weekend, besides participating in some event or march alluding to this important day, we can sit down to watch movies, stories starring women, some also directed by them, and I want to leave names for all tastes so there will be some more dramatic, others more romantic, comedies, animated, some recent, others from some time ago, but all with an important female presence and a story that speaks of how important, how challenging and how wonderful it is and has been to be a woman. Just now titles like 20th Century Women, Hidden Figures, the recent The Six Triple Eight, The Hours, Women Talking, Mona Lisa Smile, Certain Women, Promising Young Woman, the 90's classic Thelma & Louise, Suffragette, Bombshell, the incredible The Help with its kick-ass cast, the romantic Carol and The Handmaiden, the animated The Breadwinner and Persepolis, On the Basis of Sex, Greta Gerwig's now iconic Barbie, the dramatic The Last Stage, Agnes Varda's memorable One Sings the Other Doesn't and Cléo de 5 à 7, Wild with Reese Witherspoon, or two stories of powerful women of great character: The Devil Wears Prada, which everyone must have seen by now, and Miss Sloane, one of my favorite performances by Jessica Chastain. I close these recommendations with one of my favorite films of all time, written and directed by a woman, Céline Sciamma, produced by another, Bénédicte Couvreur, starring two great actresses, Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel and with cinematography by a woman, Claire Mathon, an incredible and visually beautiful story: Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (Portrait of a Lady on Fire).

Para este fin de semana, además de participar en algún evento o marcha alusiva a este día tan importante, podemos sentarnos a ver películas, historias protagonizadas por mujeres, algunas dirigidas también por ellas, y quiero dejar nombres para todos los gustos así que habrá unas más dramáticas, otras más románticas, cómicas, animadas, unas recientes, otras de hace algún tiempo, pero todas con una importante presencia femenina y una historia que habla de lo importante, lo desafiante y lo maravilloso que es y ha sido ser mujer.
