I still don't understand the purpose of general tariffs. Why would a country want to manufacture cheap consumer goods?
What makes you think it is cheap consumer goods? China manufacturers more than that. What about medicine? Autos? Raw material refining? IPhones? Laptops? Steel?
It is a lot more than just lower end goods.
Of course you're right, that's what I meant. Why impose general tariffs and not just on the products you mention? I understand a tariff on cars, but not on Christmas balls.
