Have you been thinking of jumping deeper into web3! Hell you might have thought you mastered Hive or InLeo already and want moar!
That's Awesome! But hold up, who’s your referral buddy?
In this digital age of web3, they’re supposed to be your mentor, your blockchain sensei.
Think about it for a minute .... your referrer should be your go-to for those head-scratching moments , when you are stuck or when you need advice or don't understand something!
But the internet is a ~wicked~ wild place, and web3 is not all full of nice people like we have on Hive!
Choose your referrer poorly, and you might end up with one of these four dodgy character types:
- Silent Bob the Blockchain Bro: You join through his link, excited to learn. You send him a message: "Hey! New here, any tips on navigating this platform?" then fluffing nothing.... Absolute silence.
- Shilling Sam the Pump Prophet: This guy's only advice is "BUY THE DIP!" followed by a string of rocket emojis. He's convinced every project is going "to the moon!".
- Lost Larry the Crypto Convert: Larry is just as new as you are, except he joined three weeks earlier and still thinks "NFT" stands for "Nice Furry Things."
- Flexing Fiona the Fortune Teller (of Her Own Gains): Fiona only talks about her massive profits (which may or may not be entirely accurate). She'll boast about her latest NFT flip but won't offer any practical guidance for beginners. Zero practical advice, maximum FOMO.
I am sure there are more, but these are four typical web3 character types that I see on a daily basis. I am sure you do too!
Why does your referrer matter?
They are your mentor, your teacher. The whole point of a mentor is to answer your questions and answer your concerns, not just to make more of an airdrop from you!
They are meant to sniff out a rug pull before you get rekt!
They are meant to know the lingo so you can ask them.
They could be your VIP pass in a web3 community.
Actually joking aside, when things go wrong (and they might), a good mentor will offer you support. A bad one? poof ... like a bad smell ... you will be ghosted!
This last one will overlap with the next condition but some platforms reward both referrer and referred. A good referrer might share some of that love.

How to pick your web3 sensei (without being totally gullible):
This is not financial advice but it has been gleaned over many years in affiliate marketing not just web3 from today's author @tengolotodo. Trust me many of the characters in web3 are the same bad actors that we found in affiliate marketing!
Here are some pointers to keep in mind ...
- Question Family & Friends Advice: Neighbour Ade's enthusiasm for the latest memecoin doesn't make him a blockchain expert. Do your fluffing homework.
- Look for Explanations... Not Just Emojis: If their communication is 90% rocket emojis, will they help you as a mentor? I think not!
- Check Their Actions: Do they seem genuinely helpful in public spaces?
- Ask Questions First: See if they actually respond and offer useful insights before you click their link.
Choosing your web3 referrer is not something you should do lightly.
Choose one wisely, and may your web3 journey be filled with more wins than wallet-draining woes!
As a word of warning... If you do sign up with someone who just ghosts you... don't be shocked if when you then ask someone else for help, they then turn around and say go and speak to your referrer! That referrer got the reward to refer you, make them earn it!

Scaling this web3 world is one heck if a risk especially when one enters for fast gains. My first advice is always to exercise some patience and understand the environment before pursuing those advertised flying emoji rockets.
