Getting back in the game.

in LeoFinance4 years ago

We all have moments of regret in crypto. The big opportunity that slipped through our fingers, the sold bag that moons right after we give up on it, the one that got away. For me, currently, the biggest regret is Splinterlands. We all know how things are going for the Hive based NFT game, its boom time. Well, here is my tale of regret...

Splinterlands.png

Grind for ages.

I joined Splinterlands during the Beta era, playing away daily, grinding my way along. Sometimes buying packs on occasions. Just slow and steady building up my deck. When the Untamed Kickstarter came along, I joined in, got some of the physical loot, and leveled up my deck a bit. Put some extra funds in and maxed out a few key cards, including the almighty Yodin Zaku legendary summoner. Probably spent around $220 worth of funds on him, the pride and joy of my deck. Most of the cards that I combined for Yodin were bought at around $20 each from memory. My deck was worth well over $1000 at the time, probably pushing $1200 I think.

But I was bored. The daily play for a while became a grind, and I wasn't having fun. I was able to get up in to Champions League regularly, but was never competitive with the top tier players and just wasn't having fun any more. The Land pre-sale came along, and I built some funds up for that, but it became a lottery and I ended up not participating and moved those funds out for other things.

I started eyeing of the value of the deck, and some juicy DeFi APR's which could be earned with a lot less effort, and eventually made the fateful decision...

I Sold Out.

Sold everything. Every single card in my deck. From Yodin, and his high level Fire Legendary friends, (my fire deck was my strongest) through to the lowly $0.01 reward commons. Over about a month, every card I owned was sold, and the funds moved off to other things. Nothing left, I abandoned this account and the game I had played for years.

NGMI.

We all know what happened next. BOOM.

This happened:

Nothing that I put the funds I raised from selling out has come close to the growth that has kicked in recently for the Splinterlands eco-system. I shudder to thing what the value of my deck would be now, if I had held. 10X, 20X? Who knows. Just Yodin alone, I see now on the market at max level for over $5000. I sold him for a couple hundred dollars I think - less than $300 I'm sure.

So, after having a little cry at my own short sightedness, my lack of foresight, I have accepted the harsh lesson I have been reminded of. I now come crawling back to Splinterlands, tail between my legs, to restart my monster adventure and try to build back up something from virtually nothing. This account does receive a daily SPS airdrop, (thanks to the Champion points) that I have dutifully claimed, staked, and added a small amount to to try salvage something from the wreckage of my bad call.

Back in the game. Having fun playing from scratch with the Summoner Spellbook cards, and building up a position again. Never ever selling a card again. Lesson learnt.

Congratulations to the Splinterlands team for the incredible growth the game has experienced, and congratulations to everyone that had more foresight than I, and stuck with the game to be reaping the rewards.

Can I get a do-over please?

Thanks for reading,

JK.

You're not alone in this ... I'm just as foolish, sold off all my assets too, right before moon. I feel your pain. Now faithfully completing the daily quests with the summoner spell book cards and hoping that the magic will happen for me.

We need a little Splinterlands recovery group for people in our position, that let it go and are now licking our wounds. There are plenty people with a similar story I have found, nice to know we are not the only ones that dropped the ball on Splinterlands.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I can only begin to understand your pain.
In 2019, I thought the game had no future when the update came with the introduction of Dark Energy Cristals etc.
I sold my entire deck. Lots of valuable cards. Including a goldfoil Gold Dragon(sold it for only 150$...). Some beta cards at max level.

After a few weeks/months I saw that I had made a mistake. The game was better than ever before. The update was a complete success.

So I got back in and started again from scratch (again without investing myself). That was worth it.

I think it's good that you're getting back on the horse. It's important to always re-evaluate the situation and not let past mistakes stop you. The fallacy of sunk costs also works the other way round.

I wish you a lot of success and luck with your card drawing.

It's important to always re-evaluate the situation and not let past mistakes stop you.

That's why I like writing these posts, about the mistakes I made. Not to just have a cry, but to learn the lessons and move forward without regrets. We all stuff up at some point, but learning from it is the important bit.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I don't think any of us saw this coming or we would have moved everything into the game.
We all have a few stories like this but it's never too late to fix it.

We are still early and you can build it back up.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yup, slowly building it back up is the plan. The fact that even though I completely sold out and left, I still qualified for some SPS (due to previous champions points) cushions the blow, and makes returning feel worthwhile.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

That's harsh. I hope you'll rebuild your account and enjoy the rest of the journey.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yeah, I'll rebuild a position and probably use Chaos Legion to get a decent new deck together.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I have learned the hard way that we win some and lose some!
I once had much BNB and sold all of them at I guess $14 and I guess 6-12 months later it shot to $600! Imagine that pain.

I feel your pain because we have all been there before, I also have regrets with Splinterstands because I did not play any game at all since I am not a gamer, but regardless we move!

Welcome back to the platform.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Could've, should've, would've, didn't... Everyone that has been around for more than 5 minutes in crypto would have similar stories about "the one that got away".

Always learning.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

True , always learning, one day we shall post only success stories and no regret stories hehe.

Lol well, we live and learn. No time to mull, we move💪🏻

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It is good to look back at previous decisions and assess the decision making process to learn from mistakes. This post isn't just me having a sook, it's assessing my choices and learning to make better ones.

Forwards.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Well I would have done the exact same thing you did to be honest except I never started playing with my beta packs because I couldn't figure it out. So I'm starting as well with a few Alpha cards. So, we are in the same place. But I feel your pain and would feel terrible but here we are. Hopefully your experience will give you a heads up on the next game that we have yet to even hear of.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I wouldn't say I feel terrible. Disappointed in myself but learning from the mistake. I know it's a cliché, but you learn a lot more from your failures than you do your successes. This is why I like posting when things don't work out because writing these sorts of posts actually solidify the lessons in my head.

Not sooking, learning.

GL with your Splinterlands adventures.

I don't

!LUV the decision you made.

Kind of like the ETC I held for over 2 years, and finally sold for Bitcoin. Then it went up ... like really high up ...

I don't know where all this money is coming from, but it makes me want to check my sons account.

@jk6276.mons, you've been given LUV from @metzli.

Check the LUV in your H-E wallet. (2/10)

I guess "regret" is the wrong wording to use. I like posting the failures I make as the learning experience becomes more tangible I guess by writing about it.

I'd check that account, you (and your son) could get a shock.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yeah - my six year old is "rich" thanks for alerting me to that.

Welcome back bro !

Thanks mate.

Much appreciated, TY.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I certainly wasn't expecting the prices to explode upwards so much. If you are starting over, I think it might be best to just rent out cards due to the sky high prices. As for which levels and cost is worth it or not.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

No, I don't think anyone saw this kind of boom coming. Slow, long term growth definitely, but not this. Looking at rentals, and will consider all options as I slowly work my way back in to it all.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

ouch! This time if you get bored - you can easily put all your stuff up for rent.

oh and welcome back :)

Yeah, should have done that anyway, considered something like the deck delegation programs that people run, but didn't go down that path... Oh well, lesson learnt.

TY.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It made sense at the time and I hope some of the DeFi yield farms pay off as well. Don't get too down about it because nobody can predict the future.

Yeah, hindsight is 20:20, and I'm certainly happy with how my overall portfolio is progressing. Not down, but I like posting about the bad moves I make as well as the good, as the lessons are much clearer and analyzing our mistakes helps improve decision making.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I don't think any of us saw this coming.

The Chaos Legion presale might be a good way of getting back in.

At least Rune is recovering?!?!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I'm looking forward to Chaos Legion as a way to get myself back into a decent deck without paying crazy prices.

Haha, Rune is another story all together - need to write a big post sometime about why I haven't got any at the moment. It'll probably be a post one day like this one, about another "one that got away."

Anyway, long story for another time...

At least OSMO stopped dropping after the early pump. ;-)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Oh I hadn't realised you'd sold it all!

TBH I'm amazed it's bounced back since those hacks, but it seems to be coming back strong.

OSMO is a nice little earner for sure.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

You sold your RUNE after all that shilling? Wow talk about another regret... you better buy it back before the network relaunches.

We all make mistakes and need to move on but it is nice to hear your journey through ups and downs.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Another reason why you really really REALLY HODL your SPS airdrop and stake them for even more :)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I did something like you not for tohousand dollar but for hundred. I'm very much on the plus side overall, but the alpha and beta cards (some of them legendaries) are all over the place right now... I'm sorry and full of sadness :-(. But the world won't fall apart. Hopefully there will be similar opportunities elsewhere, and which I won't fuck it up this time :-).

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Everyone has made these kinds of mistakes at times. The next opportunity is just around the corner, just gotta keep looking around corners to find one.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Exactly.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Gutted :(

Good luck re-building.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yeah, shit happens. Life goes on. Overall, crypto is very good to me, so the lessons from mistakes are just part of the process.

TY.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Just Yodin alone, I see now on the market at max level for over $5000. I sold him for a couple hundred dollars I think - less than $300 I'm sure.

I would have had a better exclamation if you were Nigeria, but my damn!!!! That part made me cringe.

I've felt this way.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

My jaw hit the floor when I say the prices he is going for at the moment. Still, lesson learnt.

Onwards.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I totally understand you, I have had moments like this on many occasions.

I am also surprised, because I arrived just 2 days before everything pumped up, and the lowest and forgotten cards I bought for less than $0.1 and now they are worth more than $0.3, I imagine that in a few months or next year they could be worth more than $5 since the percentage of growth is abysmal.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Who knows what could happen from here - the boom could go on for ages, or it could be a bubble that pops as quick as it blew up.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I am so sad to hear that. At least you get these SPS daily. You can use some to build your deck again.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yeah, the SPS will help, I'm picking up a little extra here and there on Hive Engine also, to build my staking position while it is still high return.

These lessons can be harsh, but they are definitely valuable to make better decisions in the future.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Welcome back. Hope you don't repeat the mistake of dumping your assets again.
Good luck

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yup, never selling a card ever again.

Well, never say never, but I'm damn sure I won't sell out my deck and quit again.

TY.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Take my upvote. This is a learning experience, you win some you lose some. I knew this was coming too, but I didn't buy any more packs. I sold some DEC crystals I had sitting on BSC too. I knew about the land sale for a long time. I am just a simple meme farmer and I am still grateful I can collect a couple bucks a day to play my battle lands. https://plintertalk.io is functional so we can post our battles there now and earn/stake SPT. I think that there is still plenty of opportunity, this is just the first week. What is the best way for a player to increase their airdrop at this point? Buy more packs?

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

For SPS, I'm just picking up some randomly on Hive Engine when I have spare Hive floating around, and then getting them in to stake ASAP. I can't pay the current prices for pack and cards right now, so focusing on SPS and I'll worry about cards and packs and so on when Chaos Legion arrives.
