Bolivia - Visit to the Samaipata Fort archaeological site: an afternoon of hiking and local history. / Visita al sitio arqueológico Fuerte de Samaipata: una tarde de caminata e historia local. 😃❤️

The most relaxed part of our roadtrip was when we finally arrived in Samaipata and decided to stay three nights there. Although this was to take advantage of a promotion in a beautiful hostel, it was good for us to ‘rest’ a bit. Well, I say rest because we never really did: all the time we were going back and forth trying to see as much as possible in the time we had. Two full days in Samaipata allowed us to get to know interesting points of this town in Bolivia, and one of them was the biggest archaeological site there, a tour that we were told we couldn't miss 😃.

La parte más relajada de nuestro roadtrip fue cuando finalmente llegamos a Samaipata y decidimos quedarnos tres noches ahí. Si bien esto fue para aprovechar una promoción en un hostel hermoso, nos vino bien para "descansar" un poco. Bueno, digo descansar porque en realidad nunca lo hicimos: todo el tiempo anduvimos de acá para allá tratando de conocer lo más posible en el tiempo que teníamos. Dos días completos en Samaipata nos permitieron conocer puntos interesantes de esta localidad en Bolivia, y uno de ellos fue el sitio arqueológico más grande ahí, un paseo que nos dijeron que no podíamos perdernos 😃.

When we arrived in Samaipata after a long drive of more than 300 km from Potosi, it was already quite late so we couldn't do much that day. The next day, following the recommendations of the hostel owner, we went for an interesting 10 km trek in the beautiful Elbow of the Andes. This hike in the sunshine left us exhausted, so on our second afternoon we wanted to do something a little quieter. The hostel owner's other recommendation was that we go and visit the Fort of Samaipata, a place that we could reach by car and which didn't involve much physical effort 😃.

Cuando llegamos a Samaipata después de un largo camino de más de 300 km partiendo desde Potosí, ya era bastante tarde así que no pudimos hacer mucho ese día. Al día siguiente, siguiendo las recomendaciones del dueño del hostel, fuimos a hacer un interesante trekking de 10 kilómetros en el hermoso Codo de los Andes. Esta caminata en el rayo del sol nos dejó agotados, por lo que en nuestra segunda tarde queríamos hacer algo un poco más tranquilo. La otra recomendación del dueño del hostel fue que fuéramos a visitar el Fuerte de Samaipata, un lugar al que podríamos llegar en auto y que recorrerlo todo no implicaba gran esfuerzo físico 😃.

To get to the Fort of Samaipata we had to move about 10 km from the city centre. This place was high up in the mountains, so on the way there we saw some beautiful panoramic views. All this part of Bolivia was already greenish and humid vegetation, something very different from what we had seen in the previous days. The entrance to the fort cost us 50 Bolivian pesos ($7.5), a differential price for foreigners. I have rarely travelled to other countries and had to pay the differential price for not being a local, but this entrance fee didn't seem so expensive either 😅.

Para llegar hasta el Fuerte de Samaipata tuvimos que movernos unos 10 km desde el centro de la ciudad. Este lugar quedaba en una parte alta entre las montañas, por lo que en el camino vimos unas vistas panorámicas muy hermosas. Toda esta parte de Bolivia ya era con vegetación verdosa y húmeda, algo muy diferente a lo que veníamos viendo en los días anteriores. La entrada al fuerte nos costó 50 pesos bolivianos ($7.5), un precio diferencial por ser extranjeros. Pocas veces viajé a otros países y me tocó pagar el precio diferencial por no ser local, pero esta entrada tampoco me pareció tan costosa 😅.

The whole tour of the Fort of Samaipata takes about two hours and includes several viewpoints and archaeological ruins built by the Chanés people in the 7th century and inhabited by the Incas between the 14th and 15th centuries. That day the heat was terrible, so we prepared ourselves for this hike with plenty of water and sunscreen. At the beginning of the hike there was a steep climb that gave us some very nice views of the mountains. Many people climbed this section with difficulty, but once at the top everything was flatter and easier to walk 😃.

Todo el recorrido por el Fuerte de Samaipata toma unas dos horas en donde se puede pasar por varios miradores y ruinas arqueológicas construido por el pueblo chanés en el sigo VII y poblado por los incas entre el siglo XIV y XV. Ese día el calor era terrible, así que nos preparamos para esta caminata con mucha agua y protector solar. Al principio del recorrido había una subida con bastante pendiente que permitía tener unas vistas muy lindas de las montañas. Mucha gente subía este tramo con dificultad, pero una vez arriba ya todo era más plano y fácil de recorrer 😃.

According to history, this place is an archaeological site used by the pre-Inca settlers of Samaipata. On top of this mountain, there is a large rock that these original people carved and moulded for their rituals. From the first viewpoint of the ruins, you can observe a panoramic view of the place that shows how they shaped this space, with figures of animals, spaces for meetings and also for niches for offerings 📍.

Según la historia, este lugar se trata de un sitio arqueológico usando por los pobladores preincaicos de Samaipata. Encima de este monte, hay una gran roca que estos pueblos originarios tallaron y moldearon para sus rituales. Desde el primer mirador de las ruinas se puede observar una vista panorámica del lugar que muestra cómo ellos fueron dándole forma a todo este espacio, con figuras de animales, espacios para reuniones y también para nichos de ofrendas 📍.

Nowadays, the whole area is enclosed by high wooden walkways to allow a better appreciation of the site, but also to get a closer look at the rocks. Each space has signage informing you of what you are seeing, such as this area of the rock where the first settlers could have used it as a house. The information says that the most powerful people of the settlement lived in this area, while the rest were distributed in the surroundings of the mountain 😃.

En la actualidad, todo este espacio está delimitado con pasarelas de madera en altura para poder apreciar mejore el lugar, pero también se pueden ver las rocas más de cerca. Cada espacio tiene cartelería que informa lo que se está viendo, como por ejemplo esta zona de la roca en donde los primeros pobladores podrían haber usado como casas. La información dice que en esta zona vivían los más poderosos del asentamiento, mientras que el resto se distribuía en los alrededores del monte 😃.

Something that really caught my attention about this place is the current intervention that Bolivia is doing to this archaeological site. One might think that the main objective of these sites is to preserve them as part of history, but in this fort it is not so. As we took our walk, we saw workers adding material to the ruins to smooth out the remains of the walls. I didn't like this very much and I didn't understand why they do this, if the idea is to see these constructions as they existed more than 500 years ago. What do you think about this 🙃?

Algo que me llamó muchísimo la atención de este lugar es la intervención actual que en Bolivia le están haciendo a este sitio arqueológico. Uno podría llegar a pensar que el principal objetivo en estos sitios es preservarlos como parte de la historia, pero en este fuerte no es así. Mientras dábamos nuestro paseo, vimos trabajadores agregando material sobre las ruinas para alisar los restos que quedaron de las paredes. Esto no me gustó mucho y no entendí por qué lo hacen, si se supone que la idea es ver estas construcciones tal cual existieron desde hace más 500 años. ¿Ustedes qué opinan sobre esto 🙃?

Continuing our tour further on, we were able to see other ruins still intact and in my opinion, they looked much better. We also read that the purpose of this fort was to protect the place from invaders, and that is why the first settlers placed themselves on such a high spot, so that they could see in all directions. They did a great job in this place, preparing the land to be able to live, have their crops and keep their rituals. You can tell they were very organised 😃.

Continuando nuestro recorrido más hacia allá, pudimos ver otras ruinas todavía intactas y en mi opinión, se veían mucho mejor. También leímos que el objetivo de este fuerte era proteger el lugar de los invasores, y por eso los primeros pobladores se ubicaron en este lugar tan alto, para poder ver en todas direcciones. Ellos hicieron un gran trabajo en este lugar, acondicionando el terreno para poder vivir, tener sus cultivos y mantener sus rituales. Se nota que eran muy organizados 😃.

The reason for the abandonment of this place by the Incas was due to the arrival of the Guarani people, who conquered these lands, enslaved part of the people and forced the Incas to move out of the place around the 16th century. History says that this new people did not build anything new, but settled as it was until the Hispanic presence in the same period. El motivo del abandono de este lugar por parte de los pueblos incas fue debido a la llegada de los pueblos guaranies, quienes conquistaron estas tierras, esclavizaron a parte del pueblo y obligaron a los incas a desplazarse del lugar cerca del siglo XVI. La historia dice que este nuevo pueblo no construyó nada nuevo, sino que se instalaron tal cual estaba todo hasta la presencia hispánica en ese mismo periodo. The whole route was circular and in the last part of the route it went through a small wood where you could see an old well, the use of which is still unknown. Continuing further on, you can climb up to the top of the great carved stone, where you can see some enclosures that corresponded to the niches of the local chiefs. From there you could get a great view of Samaipata, before ending the walk in the same place where we had started it. It was a good afternoon and I really liked this plan for a day doing something not so strenuous 😃.

Todo este recorrido era circular y en la última parte se atravesaba un pequeño bosque en donde se podía ver un antiguo pozo que hasta el día de hoy se desconoce su utilidad. Continuando más allá se puede subir hasta la cima de la gran piedra tallada, en donde se ven unos recintos que correspondían a los nichos de los caciques del lugar. Desde ahí se podía obtener una gran vista de Samaipata, antes de terminar el camino en el mismo lugar en el que lo habíamos empezado. Fue una buena tarde y este plan me gustó mucho como para un día haciendo algo no tan agotador 😃.

Visiting the Fort of Samaipata was another highlight of this impromptu trip to Bolivia. I really enjoyed our stay in this town, and staying there for three nights was a great decision. Being able to see some green landscapes in Bolivia wasn't bad at all, even in spite of the humidity and heat that day. Now I know a bit more about the history of this place and I have some very interesting postcards as souvenirs. Having made the most of this stop, we were ready to continue our journey ❤️.

Visitar el Fuerte de Samaipata fue otro de los puntos destacables en todo este viaje improvisado por Bolivia. Nuestra estadía en este pueblo me gustó mucho, y habernos quedado tres noches ahí fue una gran decisión. Poder ver un poco de paisajes verdes en Bolivia no estuvo nada mal, incluso a pesar de la humedad y el calor que hacía ese día. Ahora conozco un poco más sobre la historia de este lugar y me llevo de recuerdo unas postales muy interesantes. Después de haberle sacado el máximo provecho a esta parada, estábamos listos para continuar el viaje ❤️.
