As a moderator of this community I know very well that hotel reviews are not allowed here, but if you have enough faith in me to think that I could review a 5 star hotel, I want to say thank you. Maybe someday, but not today. Instead, I want to tell you about the closest I could get to a 5 star hotel and its surroundings without being invited to leave. Luckily, in this establishment they are quite considerate and share with everyone the privileged place in which they are located, which is worth visiting at least once during your stay in Ushuaia 😃.

Como moderadora de esta comunidad sé muy bien que las reseñas de hoteles no están permitidas acá, pero si me tenes la suficiente fe como para pensar que yo podría reseñar un hotel de 5 estrellas, quiero decirte gracias. Quizás algún día, pero hoy no. En su lugar, quiero hablarles de lo máximo que pude acercarme a un hotel 5 estrellas y sus alrededores sin que me invitaran a retirarme. Por suerte, en este establecimiento son bastante considerados y comparten con todos el lugar privilegiado en el que se ubican, que vale la pena visitar aunque sea una vez durante tu estadía a Ushuaia 😃.

If you are in the city centre, you only have to look north to notice a hill with a green building on it. It is the Cerro Alarken with the famous 5-star Hotel Arakur on top of it. Alarken Hill, Arakur Hotel: this is a tongue twister for tourists until they get it right. It looks close, but it is actually about 8 kilometres from the centre of Ushuaia. There are several options to get there: take a bus for $0.8 and walk 3.5 km up the road, take an Uber to the door for $5 or take a free shuttle that the hotel provides from the centre, which runs every hour. Depending on your travel budget, the choice is yours 😃.

Si te encuentras en el centro de la ciudad, basta con mirar hacia el norte para notar un monte con una construcción verde en él. Se trata del Cerro Alarken con el famoso Hotel Arakur 5 estrellas encima de él. Cerro Alarken, Hotel Arakur: esto resulta un trabalenguas para los turistas hasta que logran decirlo bien. Parece cerca, pero en realidad se encuentra a unos 8 kilómetros del centro de Ushuaia. Para llegar hasta él hay varias opciones: ir en colectivo de línea por $0.8 y caminar 3,5 km de la ruta hasta arriba, ir en Uber hasta la puerta por $5 o ir gratis en un transporte de pasajeros que el mismo hotel provee saliendo desde el centro, con una frecuencia cada una hora. Según tu presupuesto viajero, vos elegís 😃.

In my case, I decided to activate Couchsurfing to find a walking companion for the day, and the app connected me with Nicolás. We both agreed that the best option was to go by public transport and we made the 3.5 km trek up the mountain to the hotel. Unluckily for us, the weather was bad that day and it rained on the way, so we arrived at the luxurious hotel too muddy. My companion was embarrassed to enter the hotel in those conditions, but the last thing I am embarrassed about is that, so I approached the entrance anyway because I had read that you could go at least as far as the entrance hall 😃.

En mi caso, decidí activar Couchsurfing para encontrar un compañero de paseo ese día, y la aplicación me conectó con Nicolás. Ambos coincidimos en que la mejor opción era ir en transporte público e hicimos el "trekking" de 3,5 km montaña arriba hasta el hotel. Para nuestra mala suerte, el clima estaba feo ese día y en el camino tuvimos lluvia, por lo que llegamos al lujoso hotel demasiado embarrados. Mi acompañante tenía vergüenza de entrar al hotel en esas condiciones, pero yo lo último que tengo es pena por eso así que me acerqué igual a la entrada porque había leído que se podía pasar al menos hasta el hall de entrada 😃.

When we arrived, the receptionists greeted us kindly and invited us to tour the entire lobby without any problems. The place looked beautiful, all spotless and nicely perfumed, completely out of place with us. We were also told that there was a restaurant open to the public in case we wanted to have a snack. As for prices ($1=1100 ARS), for about $20 you could get a coffee, a juice, a slice of cake, toast with ham and cheese and some fruit. What do you think of this price for the most expensive hotel in Ushuaia 😃?

Cuando llegamos, los recepcionistas nos recibieron amablemente y nos invitaron a recorrer todo el lobby sin problemas. El lugar se veía hermoso, todo impecable y bien perfumado, completamente desentonando con nosotros. También nos dijeron que había un restaurante abierto al público en caso de que quisiéramos merendar algo. En cuanto a los precios ($1=1100 ARS), por unos $20 podías obtener un café, un jugo, una porción de torta, tostadas con jamón y queso y un poco de fruta. ¿Qué les parece este precio para ser el hotel más costoso de Ushuaia 😃?

Obviously neither my companion nor I paid $20 each for a simple snack, much less were we interested in paying the $250 for the cheapest double room here (and goes up to over $650 for the most expensive version), so we asked about other things to do in the vicinity. The receptionists gave us a brochure that included maps of some short trails on Alarken Hill. With circuits of no more than an hour, you could walk through a peat bog and some of the forest on this mountain. All these trails were of low difficulty, but a good option for a quiet day of hiking 😃.

Obviamente ni mi acompañante ni yo pagamos $20 cada uno por una simple merienda, y mucho menos estábamos interesados en pagar los $250 que cuesta la habitación doble más económica aquí (y asciende hasta más de $650 en su versión más costosa), así que preguntamos sobre otras cosas para hacer en los alrededores. Los recepcionistas nos dieron un folleto que incluía los mapas de unos senderos cortos en el cerro Alarken. Con circuitos de no más de una hora, se podía recorrer un turbal y un poco del bosque de esta montaña. Todos estos senderos eran de dificultad baja, pero una buena opción para un día tranquilo de caminata 😃.

One of the trails took you to the ‘top’ of Cerro Alarken, but imagine how high up this hotel is that this included a drop of only 50 metres. Ushuaia is a city that is very low on the map and close to the water, so this hill is only 285 masl high. Only a few weeks earlier I had been in Bolivia at an altitude of over 5000 metres, and now it was unbelievable to be so low. Anyway, the views from there were very good ❤️.

Uno de los senderos te llevaba hasta la "cima" del Cerro Alarken, pero imagínense lo alto que está este hotel que esto incluía un desnivel de solo 50 metros. Ushuaia es una ciudad que está muy abajo en el mapa y cerca del agua, por lo que este cerro solo tiene una altura de 285 msnm. Solo unas semanas atrás había estado en Bolivia superando los 5000 metros de altura, y ahora me resultaba increíble estar tan abajo. De cualquier forma, las vistas desde ahí eran muy buenas ❤️.

When we came down from our great feat at the summit, we rounded the hotel on the opposite side from where we had arrived. From there we could see the outdoor pools that this hotel is famous for. These are two round pools with hot water, plus a larger one connected to an indoor pool. There were guests in it, so I couldn't take a good picture of this, but only envied them a little. It was about 10°C that day in Ushuaia, and all of them swimming with these views of the city. Lucky them 😃!

Cuando bajamos de nuestra gran hazaña en la cumbre, rodeamos el hotel por el lado contrario al que habíamos llegado. Desde ahí pudimos ver las piletas externas que hacen famoso a este hotel. Se trata de dos piletas redondas con agua caliente, además de una más grande conectada con una pileta interior. Había huéspedes en ella, por lo que no pude retratar bien esto, sino solo envidiarlos un poco. Ese día hacían unos 10°C en Ushuaia, y todos ellos nadando con estas vistas a la ciudad. ¡Afortunados 😃!

While the guests were sheltered in the warm, luxurious hotel, my companion and I were freezing in the drizzle outside. We decided to go down an invented trail to make the experience a little more fun, although the wind made it difficult. Going down the vehicular road we came up would not have been as interesting as making up a path through the grasses or running wildly down. Even that hike was more difficult than the trails near the hotel 😅.

Mientras los huéspedes estaban resguardados en el lujoso y cálido hotel, mi acompañante y yo estábamos congelados merodeando bajo la llovizna exterior. Decidimos bajar por un sendero inventado para hacer un poco más divertida la experiencia, aunque el viento nos lo puso difícil. Bajar por el camino vehicular por el que subimos no hubiese sido tan interesante como inventarse un sendero entre los pastos ni bajar corriendo salvajemente. Incluso esa caminata fue más difícil que los senderos cercanos al hotel 😅.

So friends, don't let poverty win you over and dare to come even a little closer to the lives of those who have the most. My companion and I imagined what our life would be like if we could stay in that hotel, while waiting for the bus back to our respective hostels for no more than $15 a night. It was fun to get to know this part of Ushuaia and to have those views of the city for less than the $2 we invested in this tour: sometimes a little can go a long way 😃.

Entonces amigos, no dejen que la pobreza les gane y tómense el atrevimiento de aunque sea acercarse un poquito a la vida de los que más tienen. Mi acompañante y yo imaginábamos como sería nuestra vida si pudieramos hospedarnos en ese hotel, mientras esperabamos el colectivo de regreso a nuestros respectivos hosteles de no más de $15 por noche. Fue divertido conocer este punto de Ushuaia y tener esas vistas de la ciudad por menos de los $2 que invertimos en este paseo: a veces con poco se puede hacer mucho 😃.
