Inside South Africa's Deadliest Neighbourhoods: Where Gangs Rule | Witness | Documentary

- With a population of nearly six million, Cape Town is the second city of South Africa. Many of the richest people in the country have ocean villas there. But there is a dark side to this breathtakingly beautiful city. Three thousand people a year are murdered in Cape Town, making it the most dangerous city in Africa.
Shootings are commonplace, especially in the townships. Some townships have become no-go areas, plagued by murders, violent robberies and illicit trade of every kind. The police are pushed beyond their limits by the level of violence. Many locals choose to carry guns to defend themselves. Some even turn vigilante, while the middle classes barricade themselves into houses that are increasingly heavily fortified.
When they do leave their homes, people are constantly on the alert for potential threats. Last year over 18,000 people in South Africa were the victims of a carjacking at gun point. People have little to no faith in the police, as so many of these crimes remain unsolved. Some invest in panic buttons which they always carry with them. Just one quick press of the red button, and an armed response team from a private company rushes to the client’s rescue.
Manenberg, 15 kilometres from the city centre, serves as headquarters for a notorious gang who call themselves “The Americans.” They are violent drug dealers who flood the streets of Manenberg with “tik” a local version of crystal meth. Their rivals the “Dixie Boys” run protection rackets, and the gangs frequently fight for territory.
The police struggle to enforce the law, but the gangsters have no fear of prison. On the contrary, it helps them to gain status with their peers. Witnesses often refuse to speak to the police in fear of their lives.
With interviews and exceptional access, this film tells the tragic stories of beautiful Cape Town, one of the most dangerous cities in the world.
This documentary was produced by Babel Press and directed by Gary Grabli. It was first released in 2022.

What South Africa could become if only they thought with their brains. Tourism alone could bring so much to their country but 80 percent of this world wont go there because of such chaos.
I was there last year . Its really not that bad and i really loved the place and cant wait to go back .
Africa is for blacks

Father in Heaven, we pray for the Peace of Your Son Jesus to come to the lost souls of Cape Town.
Imagine that... praying for Jesus who didn't come save the CONTINENT during colonization but somehow you think he would come now😂
May God almighty save us from our wickedness
The mother sniffing his son's cloth just sent tears back down my heart.🥲🥲
As a parent, I felt the exact same thing. 🙏🏻
Maybe a leader with the testicular fortitude like President Nayib Bukele is needed in South Africa. He got a handle on crimes in El Salvador in a record time. CECOT prison is working wonders for crimes there.
But then, voices will rise up about the human rights of criminals who didn't care about the human rights of their victims. 😢🤔
Best comment on here. 💯;True.
I think about this often, but our countries characteristics are totally different, El Salvador is 1.73% the size of SA, with 10% of SAs population. Solutions run into different problems when they are scaled like that. We need to learn from them, and adapt to our needs.
I believe that prior to any lockdown, we need to socialize a plan of how to move forward with decolonizing our economy, focusing on energy and food sovereignty.
We then can look at having a similar lockdown on crime.
If we lockdown without a plan, we are running on borrowed time. We need to alleviate the symptom (The crime) while healing the cause (The system that generated the crime)
@david79340 Totally. Points taken and are valid. I understand that the poor and vulnerable are marginalised significantly, as is the case in most countries.
And so, that gap between the affluent and the poor is a factor for criminality.
However, poverty is not an excuse for criminal behaviour, though it is a factor.
I hope the powers that be unearth workable solutions to fix the high crime rate. Trinidad, too, vicious crimes are skyrocketing there.
@@ruthmelicharles5062 You are right, it's not an excuse.
The solution needs to declare an emergency, lock down on current crime (Like in El Salvador), and carry that momentum to build a solid foundation. Violent crime needs to become taboo in the minds of the people.
South Africa is worst, criminal gangs everywhere 😮😢.
Such a blight on a beautiful country
Scary stuff! It seems Cape Town is showing a glimpse of how a future Oakland and other American cities may look like.
Some american cities look worse. And capetown is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. So sad!
@@BridiegnomboCape Town is more ruthless than any state in America 🇺🇸
@@Bridiegnombonowhere in the US has whole sections of cities just comprised of nothing but make-shift aluminum sheds with no utilities or paved streets. And I don’t think you realize just how large South African slums like Khayelitsha are… over 2 million people live there inside 15 square miles… in mostly sheds with few utilities… and that’s just one slum.
In some US neighborhoods, we have homeless people pitching their tents on the sidewalk or in parks, or they have boarded up buildings. But the worse US inner city neighborhoods still have paved roads, running water, legal connections to electricity…
@Regular616 yes that is true. Ive seen some documentaires of slums in Chicago etc and wow, they look ruff. For south africa, it is so sad really. Kalyesha is in front of one of the most beautiful beach ive ever seen.
And people were telling me Cape Town is the best city to visit in SA!
Heeee
It is by far. These areas in this documentary and where the vast majority of murders happen you will never visit as a tourist or visitor to the city. Unless you know someone specifically and are visiting them there then no ordinary person will ever find themselves in these areas, there are no restaurants or any kind of attractions in them.
They’re setting you up 😂😂
@@cherryboppp exactly!!! You don’t have any reason to visit these areas that’s like you going to visit O Block in Chicago why put yourself in a precarious situation they listed the areas to stay away from and I’m going to do just that!
@@blakmagikk exactly! I’m originally from South Africa and know some of these areas well as I genuinely know people from them but otherwise I would never ever be in them. Any time I’ve met friends or family over there as tourists I would never bring them to these areas as there’s nothing to see anyway, the only type of people you might happen upon trying to go to these areas are these “dark tourism” types thinking it’d be cool to drive around a ghetto area or whatever..and for their stupidity they likely either won’t last long or something bad will happen but I doubt they’ll be back
@@blakmagikk go tell that to the German tourist and the woke crowd...and effing annoying black Americans, I have zero sympathy for idiots who think it's cool to visit the townships, hangout in the shabeens and get stabbed on their way home. There must be accountability and justice, because of the lack of it ,the situation is the remains the same. 😢
It's also about arrogance. I'm South African & so many of them try to be something they're not. They're not down to earth people compared to the rest of us in the country. Them and the Durban people think they are israel. Impunity and God's promised people. A lot of them have no basic respect.
I taught Nigerians are d problem in SA but having watched this documentary it's obvious SAns themselves are the major problem of crime there, most of them are drug addicts that's why drug business is thriving there and carjacking is rampant too,I'll say it's the cause of poverty and laziness to do legit works as well.
The racket collector making a big deal about how gangs shoot in the morning is almost hilarious. As if he's not a major part of the problem.

A country I will never visit in my life
No reform. Go El Salvador, but don't bother with the prison.
ANC are too incompetent to solve a problem like Bukele did.
This what happens When an oppressive society creates a huge gap between the rich and the poor.
This clearly points to deep rooted unresolved socioeconomic issues. Some people in the comments saying South Africa was better during Apartheid, lol now that’s a true definition of Stockholm syndrome. South Africa wasn’t like this before colonialism and apartheid. So the problem did not begin with the end of apartheid, it started with the advent of colonialism. Ask yourself this, who created the townships and for what reason? We’re just witnessing a classical case of Causation and Effect
India and Pakistan were colonised, are poorer and have worse wealth inequality than South Africa. The problem is cultural.
@ There we go again with the victim shaming. One of the people who think Africa is a country 😀. There’s a reason this documentary focuses on South African in particular. They were not just colonised, but subjected to APARTHEID. There’s still Townships in S.A for instance, there’s none in existence in most African countries, at least not any that were created by whites to effectively segregate blacks. Get your history right!!
Before colonialism?, there was nothing but savannah and jungle. Most of the blacks in South Africa are immigrants from other parts of the continent who came to brown nose the white people cause they suck at building a functioning society. It really comes down to culture and intellect, not your never ending victim mentality.
you want a black world , know you have. be happy
And yet the South African government has the nerve to criticise Israel

As a Swiss married to a South African i must say this documentation shows only a part of sa. Before i met my wife i travelled happily through whole sa.
Its areas you should not go in. I did when i was not knowing about it and i got treated super good. Could also be the opposite. After meeting my wife and driving with her through capetown, she didn't allow me to drive through certain areas. Always inform your self by locals and sa will be the most beautiful country you ever visited.
One solution, work. Get the government to invest in the infrastructure of the roads and railway system in the whole country. This will employ millions. The country will benefit the people will be invigorated to turn the country around the poor will no longer be poor.
The major problem of SA is most of these people are drug addicts and ofcourse they're too lazy for legit jobs rather they all looking for easy money by taking innocent lives.....
